BAE Lake District 2

For Supply Chain Specialists, a career at BAE Systems Submarines provides the chance to contribute to the successful delivery of large and complex contracts that impact the security of the UK. Plus, the Lake District is on your doorstep!

Our Submarines business is home to the design, build, test and commissioning of the Astute class submarines. We are also designing a new generation of submarines to replace the Vanguard class – the nation’s nuclear deterrent. When it comes to ensuring the supply of goods and services to the boat build programmes, it is our Supply Chain function that provides this vital support.

Due to growth, we’re looking for a number of Supply Chain Managers experienced in major contract or Sub contracts to join us at our Barrow-in-Furness shipyard. We provide training and development and have a clear career structure to support our employees and maximise their progression opportunities. Depending on your skills, experience and location we can consider relocation support to Cumbria.

This is why some of our employees have chosen to relocate to Cumbria:

“I decided to move to Barrow following my time at University because of the great opportunities that Cumbria has to offer, not only within the shipyard but beyond it. BAE Systems is a world leader in the defence industry and this gives you the opportunity to grow and learn new things while working within your role, all progressing your career within the company. There is a great community atmosphere amongst the town and its close relationship to the shipyard. However, the opportunities within BAE Systems were not the only reasons for my move from the south coast.

Located on the coast and with the Lake District National Park right on the doorstep, the number of possible outdoor activities are infinite, from a dog walk on the beach to a hike up Scafell Pike, take your pick! For me as a keen cyclist it was a no brainer. Having finished a day’s work I can be on my bike and in the beautiful national park within the hour, whilst the weather may not always be ideal, the views are.”

“I chose to move and work in Barrow after seeing what was on offer from both a business and lifestyle perspective.  I live just outside Ulverston with an easy commute to work and amazing access to the South Lakes District.  During the week there is ample opportunity for cycling around Coniston and Grizedale and at weekends an endless list of outdoor activities to engage in with my young family. Being 5 minutes’ walk from the local pub is an additional bonus and a chance to meet up with friends and colleagues.”

“Aside from working on one of the most complex, challenging and rewarding programmes within BAE Systems, there were many other reasons I took the opportunity to relocate to the area. After a little research, I chose to live just outside Ulverston, close to the beach, close to a village pub and close to a golf course. Suits me fine. Thousands of tourists visit the area but I have the privilege to live here. Having moved here, we have taken advantage of what is on our doorstep. Sailing on the lakes, walking the fells and cycling around Grizedale. Moving to this part of the world is a fantastic place to bring up a family – affordable and you will never get bored.”

Facilities Programme Director.

“I am a Contractor for BAE Systems Maritime Submarines. I came to Barrow because of the unique project I am now supporting. A project certainly ahead of its time, not just in Submarines but for industry generally in the UK. Workwise, a great organisation to be part of, with really fantastic people and challenges.  An added bonus is that my commute to work has now dropped to a 10 minute walk instead of the previous 2 ½ hour car journey courtesy of the M5 – M42 daily gridlock.

Living in Barrow for a short amount of time now, I have learnt very quickly how everything is so easily accessible in terms of: beaches, nature reserves, sea fishing, cycling, the lakes, wildlife, shopping, leisure and support services. Typically, all within 10 to 20 minutes of each other. This is something I intend to really exploit now that the summer has arrived.”
