Excellent opportunity to join Johnson Matthey’s global purchasing team – taking responsibility for a key strategic portfolio of raw materials and being integral in supporting future business growth

Our client, Johnson Matthey is a highly successful FTSE 100 company, an international speciality chemicals company, building into its 3rd century as a leader of added-value sustainable technologies, employing over 13,000 talented people worldwide. Its focus is on clean air, clean energy and low carbon technologies. Every day its products help improve the quality of life of millions of people around the world. This key role is part of the newly structured ‘Efficient Natural Resources Sector’, a world class supplier of catalysts, catalytic processes and precious metals. This is a newly positioned opportunity and will play a crucial role in supporting the ongoing development of the Company. Johnson Matthey seeks an experienced Buyer to join their global Procurement team to manage an important portfolio of strategic base metals and other specialty raw materials essential for business activities and growth. The role will develop and assess current and future supplier relationships and supply strategies in line with evolving Group goals; maximising supply security, contributing to profitability, cash flow, reducing risk and ensuring all CSR, EHS and QA compliance.

Reporting to the Global Purchasing Manager, with a small team, you will be responsible for the budget and long-term contract management of certain strategic raw materials. In particular you will be required to develop and maintain an expert knowledge of the Copper and copper chemicals markets, including market intelligence, financial trading value and their extended supply chains. (NB Current knowledge of these markets is not essential, although advantageous.) We seek an experienced Procurement professional with the proven expertise of managing successful procurement negotiations that have created value. You must have negotiated and developed formal agreements to ensure effective implementation and operational supply success. Strategic, conceptual thinking and critical analysis skills are essential attributes to perform this role. Likewise we seek strong commercial awareness, influencing and communication skills, as you will  proactively engage with multi-functional colleagues across all key business areas and all processes, including the Regional Supply Chain team, global S&OP, Finance, Operations, CI, R&D and New Product Introductions, to ensure alignment of procurement strategies and objectives with all business needs. Proven people leadership skills are required to coach junior members of the team, manage internal and external relationships and lead key project teams by offering direction, guidance and facilitation as the ‘contractual’ procurement expert. As an innovative, creative thinker you will offer a track record of initiating and managing change and through your persuasive style will promote process development whilst maintaining tight compliance. It is important that you have in-depth knowledge of issues affecting supply chain security, risk and current legislation.

We ideally seek a graduate, with a CIPS/MCIPS or equivalent qualification, with a proven track record of managing a portfolio of strategic global raw materials for a large Chemicals group, and controlling key supplier relationships. You will have a significant number of years buying  experience, likely gained in a global procurement team, in another Chemicals, Pharmaceuticals, Catalyst manufacturing, Utilities or other heavy manufacturing environment. (Alternatively, Johnson Matthey is open to consider high potential candidates from wider relevant backgrounds, such as related Category Sales or Marketing, Supply Chain or Hedging, who currently are developing expertise in a strategic Purchasing role.)  SAP/IT literacy is important, as is the willingness and flexibility to travel.  Future career development opportunities are excellent.

If you believe you have the requisite expertise, can-do proactive style and wider business approach required to succeed in this excellent career opening into Johnson Matthey, then please forward your CV quickly to Anita Caldwell at RMG, as the retained recruitment adviser, reference AC/12280SM.

No agencies please.
