Are you an experienced and qualified procurement professional? Are you familiar with making major strategic purchases within large, complex organisations?

Manchester is one of the most extensive higher education centres in Europe and the most popular city for students in the UK. We are at the heart of it, delivering cutting-edge skills to people from 120 countries – 94% of whom go into work or further study within six months of graduating. Since 2006, we have invested £350 million into our exceptional campus to deliver our vision of being the best modern university, and we continue to achieve and innovate every day.

About us

Our Procurement Department has the vital responsibility of ensuring that all University purchases deliver best value in terms of cost, quality and sustainability. With an annual spend of £100 million and around 10,000 orders, the team focuses on everything from equipment for new buildings to IT systems and software and facilities and estates contracts.

The role

Reporting to the Director of Finance and providing long-term strategic leadership and direction for our Procurement Services, you will significantly add value as you align purchasing to evolving needs, drive down costs and champion best-in-class performance. You will lead in reshaping sourcing strategies, as well as implementing major corporate initiatives including substantial construction works, capital projects, outsourcing and new IT systems.

About you

Of graduate calibre and professionally qualified in procurement, you will bring proven experience of leading procurement activity for a large and complex organisation. This will have given you familiarity with sourcing contractors and design teams for major programmes of work, deep understanding of compliance requirements and a good appreciation of best practice within the public sector. Naturally, you will be adept at sourcing commodities worth more than £5 million, capable of measuring and mitigating risk effectively, and passionate about achieving best value and maximising the performance of your team.
