Defra is currently recruiting Category Officers across multiple categories and locations in Bristol, Leeds, London, Newcastle, Peterborough, York and Weybridge.

Defra Group Commercial (DgC) is part of Defra, the central Government Department responsible for growing the rural economy; improving the environment; and safeguarding animal and plant health. DgC is responsible for providing a procurement and commercial service to organisations within the Defra Network such Animal Plant & Health Agency, Rural Payments Agency, Natural England and the Environment Agency.

This is an exciting time to join Defra group Commercial (DgC). The Commercial team is transforming, as they play an important role in enabling Defra group’s vision of ‘creating a great place for living’. DEFRA is also one of the lead Departments in delivering a successful exit from the EU. 

Defra is currently recruiting Category Officers across multiple categories. In these roles you will play a pivotal role in leading and delivering commercial excellence. You will be joining some of the best individuals within Commercial as they strive to deliver commercial excellence.

We have vacancies within the following categories:

Buildings - Our Buildings team work closely with Defra Estates function to manage and service Defra’s buildings and offices. This category is focused primarily on large single source Facilities Management contracts, but the team also manage commercial aspects of site and building refurbishments along with associated costs such as furniture and utilities.  These roles are based in Weybridge.

Corporate Services – The Corporate Services category has a diverse spend portfolio, making your days varied as you deliver critical programmes. With staff and offices across the country, this category covers goods and services that are used broadly across all areas of Defra. These include workforce (including temporary and permanent staff, training and other HR services) and professional services (both business related and technical).  Corporate solutions is also significant, including travel (hotels and conferences) and fleet.  These roles can be based in York, Bristol, London, Leeds, Peterborough or Newcastle.

Technology - You will be working on some of the most innovative and complex procurements within the DGC. Technology is a category that is constantly evolving and as such the work you will be doing will constantly evolve.  You could be working on contracts and procurements across a vast portfolio of spend areas including applications, connectivity, digital, hosting and software. Technology is an essential part of Defra’s infrastructure, and currently dominated by the UnITy programme that consolidated Defra and EA systems and has disaggregated supply away from two large monolithic contracts. In addition to Information & Communications Technology (ICT), this category also encompasses hardware, software, and the underpinning IT networks services.  These roles can be based in Bristol or Peterborough.

In these roles you will be:

  • Delivering and supporting in the delivery of projects, procurements and contract / supplier management roles
  • Supporting the management and development of key supplier relationships to deliver exceptional performance in cost, service and quality
  • Providing day to day advice on commercial issues and governance, taking full account of risk, exploiting commercial opportunities and maximising value of money and savings
