An exciting opportunity for a Category Buyer to join our experienced Procurement team, within the growing area of Indirects. In this role you will own the professional services category across the institute and develop category strategies and stakeholder relationships with those key indirect areas such as HR, IT, Media & PR, Health & Safety.

You’ll be given ownership of categories in various levels of development and expected to define the associated strategies through building stakeholder relationships and developing strong supply market knowledge.

You will have a good background in Procurement and whilst specific category knowledge is flexible, a strong understanding and belief in the value Procurement can deliver, is important.

As a Category Buyer at the Wellcome Sanger Institute you will:

  • Build and maintain excellent relationships with stakeholders and suppliers. Share knowledge, build trust and credibility to enable influential communication.
  • Establish good understanding of department strategy for allocated stakeholder areas, building this into Category planning
  • Manage and prioritise project workload based on Procurement principles of adding value and mitigating risk – proposing changes to approach and processes where required
  • Proactively identify new projects through stakeholder interaction
  • Formalise Category strategies, project sourcing strategies in close collaboration with key stakeholders
  • Provide commercial insight to stakeholders and project teams, based on market knowledge and wider Institute activity
  • Constructively challenge the status quo to increase value and identify/mitigate risks

About the team: 

You’ll be working in a collaborative and flexible Procurement team which has a clear vison of maximising value and minimizing commercial risk for the Institute.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong and collaborative working relationships with relevant stakeholders and project team members
  • Self-starter, able to work autonomously, but with full support of Partners and Heads of Procurement where required
  • Proven negotiator with suppliers and customers alike and has the ability to develop collaborative relationships both internally and externally
  • Strong advocate for Procurement value proposition
  • Demonstrable experience in category management and associated tools/techniques
  • Ability to take underlying data and present narrative and recommendations to stakeholders
  • Solution and output orientated with a willingness to take on challenges
  • Proven ability to listen, understand business needs and provide win-win solutions in a proactive and principled manner
  • Flexible and pragmatic attitude
  • Excellent organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Good understanding of key contractual terms

Other Information: 

 Whilst the developments around COVID-19 continue to evolve, the Wellcome Genome Campus is closed for all but essential functions and facilities. 

People remain at the centre of everything that we do and the majority of our staff are now working remotely to ensure continuity of operations, making use of remote communication and collaboration tools.

Interviews will be taking place virtually and the successful candidate should expect to be fully supported through remote on-boarding and working from home until the Campus re-opens to all staff. This approach may vary for individuals located overseas and/or where a visa is required and starting will be based on a number of factors, we will be able to provide specialist advice to those affected candidates.
